Hi,
I hope you’re having a good week so far. The weekend for me starts now.
A friend of mine recently asked me for recommendations for some books.
That made me go through the list of some of the books that I have read so far and to share some of my favourites with her.
And so I thought I’ll share the same with you too. I have read more of fiction so far but I am sharing a mix of fiction and non-fiction so that you can choose what you want to read.
Let me know if you have already read any of these.
*Remarkably bright creatures by Shelby Van Pelt* -This book explores the friendship between an elderly widow and a giant pacific octopus. The protagonist works shifts at the Sowell Bay Aquarium where she has a cleaning job. It is here that she develops a friendship and bond with the captive octopus named Marcellus. The portrayal of the characters is lovely with the lady discovering a happy secret at the aquarium in the end related to her teenage son’s death that haunts her throughout her lifetime. It’s certainly a light read that you wont be able to put down.
*To sir, with love by ER Braithwaite*- This particular book had been hanging on my shelf for quite sometime. The book has also been adapted into a movie.
It is an autobiography set in East London. The story is about a dedicated teacher who goes on to teach in a rough secondary school post world war after he is unable to find any job in his profession viz engineering because of his race. It touches upon the topic of racism and the book develops into a beautiful story with the teacher winning over his students and developing a bond with them.
*Britt Marie was here by Fredrick Beckman*- A fiction about an elderly woman who goes out to start her life again by looking for a job after she finds out her long time husband has cheated on her.
She finally gets a temporary job in a dying town where she meets various people and in due course begins to like the place. She also ends up as a coach for a football team of youngsters. The book unravels the relationship of the protagonist with various residents of the town.
*Before the coffee gets cold by toshikazu kawaguchi* - This book is set in a small cafe in japan that takes people back in time with certain conditions one being to return back in present before the coffee gets cold. The books covers 4 different emotional stories and explores how people handle the loss of a loved one. It allows these people to travel back in time to visit or relive a memory of a loved one with the knowledge that they cannot change the present.
*The men who ruled india by Philip Mason* - Most of the history books that we read is from the perspective of India and Indians, but this book gives the reader a perspective from the point of view of the colonialists about the British rule. Their point of view in the book is mostly showing how benevolent the rule was from their perspective. It has a didactic and historical description of various britishers who served in India during the time. I liked the book solely from an educational point of view as it made me more aware of how the same incident is viewed differently by the two sides.
I hope you enjoy reading some of these books and if you do, do share so.
Have a happy Sunday!
Thank you for this ! Ma'am
