Hello,
I hope you had a good week.
It’s been raining here incessantly. And I’ve had a lot of travelling because of work in the past week. Normally when I’m travelling I’m drawn to listening to podcasts over music and hence I haven’t been listening to music off late but last week I picked up my old playlist because it had been a while.
I was reading in the newspaper the other day that the choices of the children are highly influenced by the parents or in general the environment at home until the age of 5.
That made me correlate my choice of music to my parents. My parents are huge Gazal fans and hence growing up I have heard a lot of Jagjit singh, mehndi Hassan et al. Both my parents had a huge collection of cassettes of almost all the conceivable gazals of the time and my father treasures the collection to date even though the tape recorder is out of use now. Me and my sister would listen to Jagjit Singh in all our long car drives with parents.
The same taste in music passed down to me and hence that leaves me with a very narrow range of choice of music. A playlist that hasn’t been edited in years. I mostly enjoy music that’s akin to gazals and have a lot of favourite Pakistani singers. My present favourite is one called Zesshan Ali. I discovered him on Instagram because that’s where I know these days what’s new in music or otherwise.
So coming back to the point that we ape the environment we grow in, consciously I try and make my daughter listen to a variety of music from Indian classical to western classical which she currents only dances to but I hope her musical palette is that of a hydrangea.
Again I see her copying me in other activities too, if I’m sitting with a book, she wants her books or if I’m painting she wants the colours and if it’s a phone, she wants that too.
Many a times we want our younger siblings or children to do an activity which we ourselves wouldn’t do, like we would tell them to read a book while we are busy with a phone. That wouldn’t work. If we want them to play a sport its best that we play with them.
So whatever activity that we are doing, our children also draw a liking to the same just like we have hints of likes and dislikes from our parents.
On that note let me share with you one of my favourite songs that I am currently listening on loop and do share if you have some recommendation, I’d like to try something new for my taste.
Regarding Pakistani singers you can also try listening to Noor Jahan , Quratulain Blouch and Reshma
I’m glad you agree. :)
